In December 2003, NSCC Vice President of Instruction, Karen Demetre introduced a college-wide initiative on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) which attracted over 80 members of the college community.

In January 2004, North Seattle Community College was selected as a "Core Campus" of the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL). Earlier one member of the faculty had been selected as a Carnegie Research Scholar for 2003-04. This Carnegie program, launched in 1998 under the leadership of President Lee S. Schulman of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Association for Higher Education, recognizes colleges and individuals who promote scholarly approaches to teaching and learning which:

Members of the NSCC community are invited to participate in
this initiative
by engaging in scholarly discussions and organizing research projects that explore important questions related to improving teaching and learning in classrooms, at the college, and in the broader field of higher education.
