In
December 2003, NSCC Vice President of Instruction, Karen Demetre introduced
a college-wide initiative on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)
which attracted over 80 members of the college community.
In January 2004,
North Seattle Community College was selected as a "Core Campus"
of the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (CASTL).
Earlier one member of the faculty had been selected as a Carnegie Research
Scholar for 2003-04. This Carnegie program, launched in 1998 under the leadership
of President Lee S. Schulman of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement
of Teaching and the American Association for Higher Education, recognizes
colleges and individuals who promote scholarly approaches to teaching and
learning which:
NSCC
Scholarship of Teaching
and Learning Initiative
- Improve the
learning of all students;
- Bring to teaching
the recognition and rewards
afforded to other forms of scholarly work in
higher education.
- Advance the
profession and practice of teaching;
Members
of the NSCC community are invited to participate in
this initiative by engaging in scholarly discussions and organizing
research projects that explore important questions related to improving teaching
and learning in classrooms, at the college, and in the broader field of higher
education.
