Developing "Culturally Competent" Teachers
Antioch University in Seattle
began offering a graduate level teacher
certification program in 1990. During their first three years
of providing pre-service education, they became acutely aware that 90% of
their teacher training students were white. As is the case with many
other education departments, they wanted to attract minority candidates into
the teaching force. The paper referenced below describes the
approaches Antioch took in their efforts to develop "culturally competent"
teachers.
This article would be helpful reading as North considers how to develop the
"next step" following the Dumas Bay Retreat in which we discussed
pursuing the professional development of faculty in terms of multicultural
education, as outlined by Dr. James A. Banks during our recent all-college
Day of Learning.
