AERA is the most prominent international professional organization with the
primary goal of advancing educational research and its practical application.
Its 20,000 members are educators; administrators; directors of research, testing
or evaluation in federal, state and local agencies; counselors; evaluators;
graduate students; and behavioral scientists. The broad range of disciplines
represented by the membership includes education, psychology, statistics,
sociology, history, economics, philosophy, anthropology, and political science.
The American
Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC)

The American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) is a unique-and uniquely
American Indian-organization. It was founded in 1972 by the presidents of
the nation's first six Tribal Colleges, as an informal collaboration among
member colleges. Today, AIHEC has grown to represent 34 colleges in the United
States and one Canadian institution. Unlike most professional associations,
it is governed jointly by each member institution. AIHEC's mission is to support
the work of these colleges and the national movement for tribal self-determination.
Its mission statement, adopted in 1973, identifies four objectives: maintain
commonly held standards of quality in American Indian education; support the
development of new tribally controlled colleges; promote and assist in the
development of legislation to support American Indian higher education; and
encourage greater participation by American Indians in the development of
