Pedagogy 102
Monday, November 9, 2:30 to 4:00 PM, CC 2153
Facilitator Jane Lister-Reis

Pedagogy 102 is a year-long, bi-monthly community learning group for faculty sponsored annually by North’s Teaching and Learning Center, and facilitated by faculty development coordinator Jane Lister Reis. This year’s focus will again be on the investigation of the complex artistry we call teaching. Using L. Dee Fink’s book, Creating Significant Learning Experiences: An Integrated Approach to Designing College Courses as our text, we will explore Fink’s central question, “What kinds of learning will be significant for [my] students, and how can I create a course [e.g., learning activities] that will result in that kind of learning?” To create a real learning lab environment in which to explore this central question, we will also participate as both a teacher and a learner where we can practice and explore together our teaching practice. About our text:
“The whole point of this book is to offer ideas that can improve the way teaching is normally practiced in higher education. For this to happen, readers who teach will need to see, first, that there are ways of teaching that are different, significantly different, from what they are doing now. Second, they will need to be persuaded that these new and different ways of teaching will result in good things happening, both for their students and for themselves. Third, they will need guidance in figuring out how to teach in new ways. Finally, their institution…will need to recognize the worth of this effort and provide a proper level of encouragement and support” (L. Dee Fink, xii).

Jing Project and Screencast.com
Tuesday, November 10, 2:00 to 3:00 PM, TLC LB 3231C
Instructor Jean Kent

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to develop rich media learning materials and really connect with students using Jing Project and Screencast.com. Jing is a free program that lets you create short screen capture videos and snapshots which are automagically copied to Screencast.com so they can be shared with your students via Angel Learning, a web page, or email.

Jing will record everything on your computer screen – either as a video or as a single image with text boxes, arrows, and highlights that help explain the image. Jing is perfect for:

  • showing online students how to:
    • use software applications like Word, Excel, and Access
    • navigate a course web site or course management system
    • code and debug a program or web page
    • correct homework errors
  • creating short (5 minutes or less) demos or tutorials
  • making rich media course FAQs

Jean guarantees your students will thrive with the help of you Jing videos and screen snapshots just as hers have.

Advanced Angel Teaching Tips
Thursday, November 12, Noon to 2:00 PM, TLC LB 3231C
Instructor SCCC Nutrition Instructor Deborah Ocken
This helpful "higher angel" learning lab will focus on the pedagogy of teaching with Angel and how to make it happen through the Angel interface. Topics will include effective use of the Learning Object Repository (LOR, the instructor's private storage area in Angel) to create a complete learning module once and be able to modify and reuse it many times; how to maximize interactive communication with and among students through the discussion board tools; effective use the amazingly versatile reports tool; and last but not least, a prelimary pass over the many uses of automation in Angel, (affectionately aka the "secret agent") to reveal content sequentially or link its appearance to student progress. (For those interested in setting up their course to take full advantage of the freedom the automation feature provides, Deborah will return next week for a session focused entirely on Automation.) This will be Deborah's fourth year teaching with Angel and she has a wealth of tips and tricks to pass on to newer users. If you have specific questions you would like her to address, please feel free to email them ahead of time to tlcnorth@sccd.ctc.edu so she can do any necessary research and have good answers ready at the lab.
