Pedagogy 102
Monday, January 11, 2:30 to 4:00 PM, CC2153
Facilitator Jane Lister-Reis

Interested in learning more about the concept of active learning and specific ideas for these kinds of activities for your classes?

You’re invited to join us at our first Winter Quarter Pedagogy 102 gathering for what should be quite a fun and informative session about the ways we actively co-construct understanding.

The session begins at 2:30 pm and concludes at 4:00 in CC2153 (the coordinated studies room across from the President’s Office).  Come for the cookies and tea and stay for the tremendous amount we learn from each other and the many ways we can help each other improve our artistry as educators.

Facilitator Jane Lister-Reis. Interested? For more information please email her at jreis@sccd.ctc.edu or phone the TLC at 206-527-3776, so she'll know how many cookies to bake!

Offered through the college’s Teaching and Learning Center, Pedagogy 101/102 are two year-long, monthly professional development experiences open to all faculty, but are especially designed with new faculty (both full- and part-time) in mind.

In Pedagogy 101, faculty used discussion materials, a common text and reflective practices to build their own learning community as a safe and supportive environment through which to explore and share their own teaching and learning practices (and to be able to apply these same principles, practices and values in their classroom).

In Pedagogy 102, faculty will learn instructional design skills in order to ensure their courses have robust learning outcomes, clear concepts and skills, and effective assessment tools. At the end of the academic year, faculty will be asked to share their learning project/s with the larger academic community.

Note: You can choose to sign up for both Pedagogy 101 and 102, or just one. When you register, please plan to commit to the entire year’s program.

Collaborative Learning I: Social Sciences and Humanties
On Friday, January 15, noon-2:30 pm in the clubroom (located in the SW corner of the cafeteria) we’ll be focusing on small group collaborative learning strategies – how faculty can use active learning activities to improve students’ critical reading, writing, thinking and speaking skills within a diverse learning environment.

This month’s focus on collaborative learning will use small group strategies mainly from the social sciences and humanities. Next month, we’ll include collaborative learning activities used successfully in the sciences.

If you haven’t attended before, please know that Pedagogy 101 is a theme-based, monthly, open group especially designed for part-time faculty at North to explore different pedagogical issues.

We’d love to have you join us. Bring your lunch or pick something up in the cafeteria. And please RSVP to jreis@sccd.ctc.edu so I know how many cookies to bake!

Here are some of the handouts in case you can’t attend:
