NSCC Winter 2005 Day of Learning: The Arts & War
"Understand artistic expression as an essential human and cultural phenomenon"
Assessment of our Learning Outcome 9

Here are two ways to be involved:

1. Participating faculty can require their students to:

a. Attend the play

b. Participate in the Day of Learning activities
[Note: there will be an Evening of Learning to accommodate evening students.]

c. Write a reflection paper talking about what they experienced and how this way of knowing--through the arts--is different from other ways of knowing

2. Participating faculty can commit themselves to:

a. Attend the play

b. Participate in the Day of Learning/Evening of Learning

c. Engage in a joint reading of student reflection papers on Friday, March 11, 1-4 p.m. Stipends of $25/hour will be paid.

An invitation to faculty to involve students:
Special 2-credit class available for students: "The Arts and War"
For all faculty, and especially those whose course outlines indicate that their course meets Gen Ed Outcome 9,  you are invited to  join in with one or more
of your classes to make this a meaningful learning experience for your student.

Attend a orientation session on 1/28 or 2/1 at 2 pm*

Attend the play, Another Day in Baghdad  at NSCC (Feb 10-27)

Read Tim O’Brien’s book The Things They Carried Participate in two seminars (2/22 and another TBA)*

Write a paper exploring the connections between the above book and play

Participate in the NSCC Day of Learning activities Feb 23*

Visit NSCC Art Gallery photographic show on your own

Attend and write a short response to any two of several lectures, films, or panels to be scheduled.

Write a reflection paper on your experiences with "The Arts and War"

A seminar course focusing on the role of the arts in exploring human dimensions of war based on the play "Another Day in Baghdad."
