All
my friends and my family are probably sick of hearing how beneficial
these classes are. I tell everyone who works with children, or is
even considering working with children, take these classes.
Nancy Awamura, former corporate employee
Kim Chau Pham, Early Head Start teacher
Suzanne Johnson, parent cooperative preschool teacher
The
sheer amount of games and materials I was introduced to in this class
has been very useful. In Head Start I don't usually see different kinds
of sorting materials, but now I have a whole knew perspective on what
to buy, save, make and acquire. Teachers
of any grade would benefit from this class. That would allow the children
in my class to continue their exploration of math in the years beyond.
Michelle Huntley, Head Start teacher
It is amazing to me
how basic and simple it is to present math games and math problem storytelling.
I am now making available all sorts of interesting materials for the
children to count, sort, and create designs. I can feel how these activities
enhance math understanding and pave the road to future success. —Dahn
Carey, Preschool Teacher This class helped rid
me of any pre-conceived notions I had about math in a preschool setting.
It made me realize the broad spectrum of activities available, which
happen to be fun, yet are still considered mathematics. It gave me a
fresh outlook on the subject of math and made it fun for me again, which,
in turn, motivates me to use it every chance I can get in the classroom! The assignments were
fun to do. I liked making all the materials in class and then taking
them back to the preschool to test them. It was interesting to see which
activities the children were more enthusiastic about. The 'dice toss'
and 'listen and count' are hits during circle time now. Victoria Porter,
Preschool Teacher
I have
banished the naive thought that learning to count was the only great mark
to success with math that young children can have. This class gave me
an abundance of tricks in the bag. This class will broaden anyone's horizons.
Let me
compare this class to the rays of the sun. Can you feel its heat? Yes,
that is how I feel it. This has sunk into me and has made me feel awake
and energized wtih all the ideas. You have to take this class. It is a
hands-on experience that lets you understand children at their level and
how to help them build fundamental math skills.
In the
past few months I have been feeling rather burnt out; after 13 years in
the same classroom I was not feeling very inspired. But ever since the
first class I have returned to my room to ramble on and on about what
I have learned the night before. It has been so reassuring to sit in a
room of like-minded teachers sharing our passions and discoveries. I have
never been impressed by most of the toys offered in "teacher"
catalogs, and I try to find simple, real, natural materials for my students.
It is wonderful to find that my instincts have always been correct, and
now I have new ideas for more home made stuff.
I am always
excited to share what I have learned in my classes with my supervisor
and my co-workers. I keep encouraging my co-workers to take these classes
because they really work.
I value
the introduction to Froebel's philosophy and gifts. My sense of joy and
wonder has increased with the great math materials I have now. I am more
competent in determining the math readiness of my children. I recommend
this class enthusiatically.
Being a
math person, I was very excited to be in this class. I was hoping I could
learn to foster that same interest in the children I teach in Head Start.
All I knew about math for preschool children was rote counting and counting
materials. Now I have learned that math is everywhere and more than memorization.
I see math all over my classroom and know how to get the kids sparked.
