The Curriculum and Academic Standards
Committee (CAS) is a standing campus governance committee which
encourages and fosters curriculum
development and faculty participation in the governance of the college
curriculum and academic standards. As a standing committee in the campus
shared-governance process, CAS seeks to remain responsive to emerging
needs; to recognize and respect the contributions of all members of the college,
and to support quality, openness, and vision in teaching and learning.
Matters that need
to
be brought to CAS for recommendation include the following:
 |
All
degree and/or certificate deletions, additions, and revisions,
except for extremely minor changes, such as name changes, and
changes in course descriptions. |
 |
General education outcomes and requirements for degree and
certificate programs. |
 |
Addition of courses. |
 |
Matters pertaining to academic standards, e.g. college grading
policy, program admission requirements, academic probation policy,
course withdrawal policy. |
 |
Assessment, both for student placement and for student outcomes. |
 |
Any
curriculum or academic standards related issue brought to the
committee by the administration or the college faculty. |
 |
Program reviews. |
All
changes that effect the Master Course Outline of a course or the Scope
and Sequence of a Program need to be presented to CAS.
The following DO require a CAS vote:
 |
New courses
|
 |
New programs
|
 |
Course name change
|
 |
Course prefix or number
change |
 |
Course credit change
|
 |
Course description change
|
 |
Any other
“significant” course changes (such as learning objectives etc)
|
The following revisions DO NOT require
a CAS vote but do need to inform and provide appropriate paperwork to CAS:
 |
Course pre-requisite change
|
 |
Course deletions from inventory
|
 |
Reducing the
amount of General Education Outcomes to those that are supported
by substantive, rather than incidental, instruction and
assessment in the course |
| |
and currently |
 |
programs
replacing listed internship courses with CWE 110 |
|

Before beginning
any process, please read the list of
Questions to Ask Yourself. These are questions that
you should be asking or investigating, with your division, department and/or TAC,
prior to creating any new course or program or prior to any revisions,
and are a guide to help you critically assess the necessity
of the new course or program, or any changes.
Please remember
that
all signatures from the appropriate stakeholders must
be obtained prior to CAS presentation.
(It is the
instructors job to obtain the signatures for the course paperwork,
not the secretarys, so the instructor hears the feedback from
the stakeholders and make any changes suggested).
If you need help
with any of the steps, please contact the CAS chair or the CAS
representative from your division.
